Modern day marriages and olden day marriages are a lot different. In earlier times in Israel, there were strict laws governing marriage and betrothal. If these laws are broken, the culprits could be stoned to death in serious offences, or fined a certain amount of silver shekels in lesser offences.
In those days, a woman's chastity was very important. If a man suspected that his bride was not a virgin and spoke against her in public, the parents of the bride should bring the proof of her virginity to the elders. This "proof" referred to the cloth of the marriage bed. Then, the bride's father should explain the situation to the elders and spread the cloth in front of the elders. If there's proof that the bride was indeed a virgin, the elders shall chastise the man and "they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days." (Deuteronomy 22:19) In the event that the elders didn't find any proof of virginity on the cloth, the bride should be dragged out into the streets and be stoned to death by the men of the city.
If a man committed adultery with a married woman, both of them would be sentenced to death. If a betrothed virgin girl fornicated with another man in the city, she and her lover would be stoned to death. In the event that the betrothed virgin girl was in the field and a man forced himself on her, the man would be sentenced to death. Since the girl cried and there was nobody who came to her aid, she was not guilty of any sin.
Finally, if a man found a virgin girl who was not betrothed, and they were caught in the act of fornication, "the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days." (Deuteronomy 22:29)
