When it comes to jewelry, some metals take hold for certain purposes and it seems as if other metals do not stand a chance. But as is often the case in life, things do not stay the same forever.
For an untold number of years gold has been the metal of choice for wedding rings. Gold represented quality, durability and quality. Many brides could not imagine getting a ring made with a metal other than gold and many grooms would not have thought to give anything but gold.
And for a long time, yellow gold was the gold of choice for wedding rings. Although in the last half century or so, some people have turned to white gold instead.
In recent, years however, platinum came to the forefront as a favorite metal too. In fact, platinum has been considered kind of elite--a metal used by those in the know. Something to separate them from the masses, who still think that gold is the metal of choice.
But now, there is a move to promote sterling silver as a viable choice for wedding rings. One publication noted that sterling silver is bright, strong, good at resisting rust and--perhaps this will be the real selling point--sterling silver is quite affordable.
Another selling point for why people should consider sterling silver for wedding rings is that is it considered to be "green." And no, not green in color, but green in the sense that it goes through an environmentally friendly production process. When crafting jewelry made of certain kinds of sterling silver, it is not necessary to use the chemicals that are used to make jewelry with other metals. With other metals, there is the possibility that they will retain damage after being exposed to high heat during the production process, but this is not the case with sterling silver.
Of course this does not mean that wedding rings made of other metals have lost their value. After all, there is not certainty that some jewelry makers efforts to push for people to embrace sterling silver wedding rings will actually take off.
If you have jewelry made of gold, platinum or silver that you do not want to hold onto, you can sell gold, sell platinum or sell silver to a refiner. Get cash for silver or cash for gold and buy yourself something nice or something that you need.
