There is an expression that people sometimes use about selling the family silver. Depending on the context this expression can be seen as insulting. There really is not insult in selling silver. Selling silver and other assets is a smart move if you find that you need to increase the amount of money in your coffers. It is also a good step if you find that your house is quite full of things already.
True, it is not easy to think of selling things that belonged to other family members like silver jewelry or silver flatware, but in many cases, people are not using this silver anyway. They hold onto silver flatware sets or even silver scrap because they are afraid of insulting the family honor. They do not consider that the family honor has nothing to do with hoarding silver that no one is using.
In today's society, things are much less formal than they used to be. If you have silver serving pieces or a sterling silver flatware set, how often do you actually use it? Maybe you bring out the silver for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Maybe. Or maybe you use everyday utensils or dine in a restaurant and use their silver flatware. All the while, your silver sits in your home, unused.
Whatever the case, it is quite possible that selling the silver will bring honor and not shame. When you sell your silver, you will be that much closer to de-cluttering your house and you know that Mom will approve of that.
