Is it Time to Sell the Family Silver?

For some people, getting rid of old silver just makes sense because they simply do not have room for it anymore.

If you are downsizing--leaving your home for a smaller one, you just cannot take everything with you to your much smaller space. You can sell silver and get cash for silver that you can use for other things that you will need. Or you can use the money you get from selling silver towards your vacation fund or any other fund you have.

Some of you, on the other hand, may technically have room for silver, but you might no actually want it. If you are the relative of someone who has decided to move into a smaller home, perhaps you have been on the receiving end of their unwanted silver. They meant well, but they did not know that you really do not have much use for silver.

Sociologists say that silver just does not carry the kind of societal weight that it used to. For one thing, we are all very pressed for time and polishing silver is not an easy task. We would much rather buy flatware that we can easily put into the dishwasher after a meal is over. Sterling silver flatware that must be polished has lost its appeal.

And although we all still very much enjoy being connected to our families, times have changed. Family never goes out of style, but in some cases the family’s silver heirlooms do fall out of fashion. Grandmother still means a lot to you but grandmother’s silver does not carry the prestige that it once did. We still recognize silver as a precious and very valuable metal, and yet still many of us do not have our heart set of collecting a lot of silver serving objects.

For a variety of reasons you cannot really use an elaborate silver tea service or you really like the set of sterling silver flatware that you have. You need to keep your house and your head clear as you get ready to start a brand new year. It is hard to say no to family heirlooms, but if you feel that you will not cause a family feud, it is okay to sell the silver.  When you sell silver you'll get cash for silver that you can use to adorn your house with other objects, one that you really want.
