The World's Largest Silver Coin

The Europe Taler 2008 was launched in Austria and Switzerland last year during the European Championship of Football. With a weight of 42.2 pounds and a circumference of 44.6 inches, it is regarded as the largest silver coin in the world. Considering that one troy ounce of silver was worth $16.62 at that time, the bullion value of the coin was estimated to be worth $23,600.

Smaller versions of the gigantic coin were released soon after the Euro Championship. Each of these coins weighed 4 ounces and measured 2.4 inches in diameter, and they were sold at a price of 108 Euro. Only 2,008 of these coins were minted, and pieces of 500-year-old wood were included in the packaging.

The front side of the Europe Taler 2008 shows the same design as the original Taler coins which were used about 5 centuries ago. It bears an image of armor-clad King Maximilian mounted on a horse, holding a banner that shows a double-eagle symbol. However, the Talers of old have the word “Europe” on this side of the coin, but the new one does not.

On the reverse side of the coin, an image that symbolizes the unification of Europe is shown. The central picture has several hexagons that are similar to those that are found on a football, and a few of these hexagons hold the images of certain historic European personalities, including Antonio Vivaldi the composer, Martin Luther, James Watt the inventor, and Bertha von Suttner, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. At the center of the image, there is a mint tower that represents the Hall Mint, a symbol of a prosperous future. The tower is surrounded by stars that signify the unity of Europe.

The Hall Mint has produced 5 of the largest silver coins in the world to celebrate the 2006 European Championship of Football as well as the 500th anniversary of Maximilian I, the first Emperor of Europe.

If you are a silver buyer, you should try to get your hands on this limited edition coin from dealers that sell silver. The historical significance of the coin will ensure that you will get instant cash for silver if you sell it in the future.
