One of the more memorable royal silver jubilees was the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II. It was held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her ascension to the throne of the United Kingdom and the countries where she is revered as sovereign such as Australia, Canada, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Belize, and New Zealand, just to name a few. As she's the Head of the Commonwealth, the Silver Jubilee was a also greeted with enthusiasm across the Commonwealth.
After George VI passed away, Elizabeth was announced as the new queen. On June 2, 1953 Elizabeth II was crowned in Westminster Abbey. She was 27 years old. The event was televised in all the countries of the Commonwealth, drawing an audience of 20 million viewers. After 25 years, Queen Elizabeth II's stature grew as she spread a measure of goodwill everywhere she went. Thus, it was fitting that her Silver Jubilee was celebrated with much fanfare and splendor.
In fact, it began as early as February 6, 1977 with churches holding commemorative services throughout the United Kingdom. The air of festivity gripped the nation as every town and city prepared for the visit of the Royals. Starting from Glasgow on May 17, Elizabeth II and Prince Philip travelled to 36 counties, attracting massive crowds as they made the rounds. All the anticipation and preparation built to a climax in the June celebrations. Sparked by the lighting of the spectacular bonfire beacon by the Queen at Windsor Castle, beacons across the land were ignited. On June 7, the activities included a Service of Thanksgiving which was attended by some of the most notable leaders of the world and the royal procession to Buckingham Palace. These events were televised to more than 500 million viewers across the world. It was a jolly grand time for all of Britain as numerous street parties were thrown to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the Queen.
Perhaps, the only sour point of the celebrations was the Sex Pistols' attempt to play "God Save the Queen" from a boat on the River Thames. It would have been interesting if they were allowed to do so. However, they were stopped by the police. At the time of the Silver Jubilee, "God Save the Queen" was second on the UK charts.
Indeed, the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II was a memorable event. If you have a commemorative silver coin of the Silver Jubilee, you can bring it to a silver buyer who pays the top dollar for silver. Get instant cash for silver today!
