If you pay attention to Suzanne Vega's songs, you will discover a world of nostalgia, shrouded in rich metaphors. Sure, she has written many songs, but one of the most outstanding songs is the very second song she'd ever written, entitled The Silver Lady. Since Vega wrote the song when she was just fifteen, it's good to look at the Silver Lady again, some 35 years later.
The song begins with the singer harking back to the time when she was still young, telling the tale of her one and only conversation with the Silver Lady. Who is this Silver Lady? How is she Silver? Is her hair or skin or wings Silver? We don't know. We do know that she could fly, and she was the only daughter of a crazy man. On her golden pony, the Silver Lady, laughed but once, an echo, distant and cold. One day, the little girl chased the river and when she got far enough from home, she found the Silver Lady, in some distress. Innocently, the little girl consoled the Silver Lady, reasoning that she should be flying and singing as birds, over the river. Strangely, the Silver Lady revealed that she had no wings, and if she did, surely, the little girl wouldn't have met her that day.
Without wiping away her tears, the Silver Lady revealed how she was left to care for her ageing father when her brothers went where the green pastures call. Then, she confessed that though she loved her father and speculated that he would be absolutely distraught if she departed, yet, she's dying because her spirit wanted to be with the ocean, which was calling her, like a song.
The Silver Lady turned away as the little girl went home. The very next day, the Silver Lady escaped, on her horse, and nobody knew where she went. As for her father, the madman, he became madder still, eventually drowning in the river. The Silver Lady was gone and she was never seen again. Now, the little girl, no longer so little, she knows, the Silver Lady's free, whenever she encounters a silver breeze.
