Quare and Horseman Silver Antique Pocket Watch

Not many people carry pocket watches nowadays. Most people think of these timepieces as antiques, more suitable to be collected than used. If you take some time to look at some of the older pocket watches, you will surely be amazed at the level of craftsmanship as well as the immaculate designs. Case in point: the Quare and Horseman Silver Antique Pocket Watch. This is truly a masterpiece in the art of fine watch making.

Daniel Quare was a highly respected 17th century master watchmaker from England. He also crafted many clocks for Europe's royalty. Among his inventions were the repeating watch mechanism and the portable barometer. Just this year, the Daily Mail reported that a 3 ft Quare barometer was stolen from the Fairfax House in York. It's valued at 500,000 pounds. Not so much is known about Stephen Horseman except that he was Quare's apprentice, but they entered into partnership later, forming Quare and Horseman. This silver pocket watch is one of their creations.

Measuring 58mm, the silver case gives the watch a quiet elegance, hiding the beauty of its dial perfectly. It was made around 1718 AD. Looking at the center of the dial, you will see a crowned lion on the left, standing erect like a human being, holding unto the point where the base of the hour and minute hands rest. Mirroring the lion on the right side is a unicorn in similar posture. Immediately above their heads is a banner that says "QUARE & HORSEMAN" and on top of the banner is a majestic looking crown. Beneath the lion and the unicorn is a banner with the word "LONDON" and below the banner is the face of a man with really curly hair, supposedly Quare's logo. The inner circular band shows Roman numerals from I to XII, interspersed with diamond shaped symbols. The outer circular band has Arabic numbers that correspond with the Roman numerals so the number "5" coincides with "I" and "10" coincides with "II" and so on. Studying the mechanism of the silver pocket watch, you will be impressed by how they have merged art with functionality.
