The visions of a time when those with diagnosed with Mental Illness have moved from being in the psychiatric hospitals to being rehabilitated to live in the community is a gold packed achievement in our time and era. This movement to reintegrate Client's of mental illness into the community bringing the medication, socialization and medical treatments directly to them came about as the expose to improper psychiatric facilities were being shut down in major cites on the east coast. Out of this came what was known as the "Consumer Movement" were those with mental illness began to advocate for themselves and were even able to work hard enough to even afford some pieces of precious jewelry. Over time however, many stereotypes and challenges persisted through out the 1980's up until the early 1990's in which the consumer movement got even stronger. It was at this time that Mental Health professionals contemplated the idea that Client's were just as capable of living within the society, to have an apartment and function in the society with treatments. This was the cause of slight schism between those who followed the medical model with those who followed the socialization model of proposed treatments.
Out of this idea a 13 year study was conducted and found that with continuous supports in the community such as follow up visits from case managers and therapist, many Client's diagnosed with some type of mental illness were able to lead just as functional lives as those without mental illness; with the additions of a few adjustments. Many consumers even started their own business and some were even able to use the system of the internet to visit some online pawnbrokers and were just as savvy enough to sell their cash for gold in order to invest in their financial well being.
Now in the year of 2009, the Mental Health Services field has become very dynamic and Client's are taking part in their own care. And more recently there have been Assertive Community Treatment teams that have even gone so far as to bring a whole system of wrap around services by having nurses, therapist, case managers and employment specialist who go and meet with the Client in the community so they don't have to come into the office always for services. Like the value of a shiny gold coin, the modern changes within the Mental Health system have proved to be very in needed in a world that is changing fast.
