The year 1994 was special for many reasons. At the time when Bill Clinton was the President of the United States, the NAFTA was formed, Nancy Kerrigan's rivalry with Tonya Harding gained some spicy attention, Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain committed suicide, Woodstock happened again, and the United States hosted the 15th Soccer World Cup. Let's look at the 1994 World Cup Silver Dollar.
Prior to the 1994 World Cup, soccer's ultimate tournament had only been held in Europe, South America, and Mexico. The major sports in the U.S. were American football, basketball, baseball, and ice hockey. Many Americans hadn't even seen a soccer match so there were concerns that the World Cup would be poorly attended. Surprisingly, around 3.6 million people went to the 52 matches and up to this day, the 1994 World Cup is still the highest attended edition ever. To commemorate the event, the U.S. Mint came up with the 1994 World Cup Silver Dollar.
Measuring 38.1 mm, the 1994 World Cup Silver Dollar weighs 26.73 g with composition of 90% silver. Designed by Dean McMullen, the obverse features two soccer players in a muscular tussle for the ball. On top of them is the word "LIBERTY," interspersed with 5-pointed stars and the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" are placed below the players' feet. The year "1994" is also prominently seen. On the reverse, the official 1994 FIFA World Cup logo takes center stage, flanked by two olive branches. Immediately beneath the logo are the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM." On top are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and below, the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" is displayed. The mint mark is located between the final "A" in "AMERICA" and the "R" in "DOLLAR."
Do you know who won the 1994 World Cup? If you have a 1994 World Cup Silver Dollar, you can bring it to a silver buyer for an appraisal. Other than that, all you need to know is that you can get instant cash for silver when you sell silver.
