Perhaps, you find yourself in Mexico, enjoying the beautiful beaches, mingling with the affectionate locals, taking in the air of a somewhat different culture, and looking to do some shopping to crown what would be a memorable holiday. Since Mexico is one of the top silver producers in the world, it would make sense to look for a great silver bargain. If you are a silver buyer, buying silver in Mexico is almost always a good deal. However, you don't ever want to end up buying "silver" which is not silver. Here are some tips to spot real silver in Mexico.
According to experts, one of the most telling signs is the marks on the silver. Usually, you will see at least two, sometimes three marks on real Mexican silver. The first is the fineness. If you are looking for sterling silver, a fineness of "925." means that the pure silver content is 92.5%. As in the amalgamation of silver, the rest of the composition is made up of another metal such as copper or the like. In Mexico, you can also find silver with fineness of "950." though it's not as common as sterling silver. Coupled with the "Mexico" mark, you can almost be sure that your silver is the real thing. Also, the more trusted jewelers may put another seal on the silver. If you see something like "JL-68", don't be alarmed. It's good.
Obviously, you always have to use some good common sense when you are shopping, more so when you are looking for a "steal" of a deal in a foreign land. Well, you will not be short of offers. If you are on the streets, you will find yourself swarmed by great offers from the vendors, peddling cheap, cheap silver jewelries and the like. When somebody is trying to sell you a 24 gram silver item for USD 2 when the market rate is between USD 35 to USD 40, you better watch it. If it's too good to be true, it's definitely not real silver. Remember. All that gleams, may not be silver. It can be Alpaca or "German Silver."
To be safe, it's still best that you buy silver from the reputed jewelers. That way, you don't have much to worry about. It may cost a litle more but you can be assured that you are getting your money's worth. Now, you can get your money's worth by selling silver and getting instant cash for silver!
