Getting First Place: Gold and the Olympics

Now that we are in between years while waiting for the Olympics to start again, it is interesting to know what and where the concept of this ‘little’ even came from. Of course we all know that the overall sport itself came out of the Greek pastime of competing with each other in events like, the pole vault, track and field, and other events like the high jump. Although it is noble to get a bronze, or even a silver medal for third and second place the overall object would be to get that oversized gold coin other wise known as the gold medal for winning first place. Of course over the years the style and application on the Olympics have changed drastically, the spirit of competition pretty much remains the same.

When thinking about the connection of the Olympics and that achievement of trying to get the gold one only has to look at our Nation’s obsession with getting it and of course it would only be fair to. What is interesting about this is a long time ago; 1896 to be exact, winners of a particular event was given the Silver medal; this indicated the winner. But as time went on, 1904 to be exact the gold pack medal was the indicator of a first place victory. And since then it has continued to go in this fashion.

Where as before in the early Greek times, the competition would only include people from the local tribes across the land, it has now evolved into a cross national, multi-country representational sports fest, which is a good thing. It is a good thing especially in these times when nations are at odds over countless issues that seem to further divide the advancement of human kind.

Earlier in the page we talked about America’s passion to receive gold in the Olympics and seemed to echo even further when swimmer Michael Phelps brought back 8 gold medals during the 2008 Olympics. Now if that doesn’t remind you of cash for gold then I don’t know what does. What ever peoples take on the Olympics it is neat to know that something that started out in ancient times continues to this day. By judging from the successes of the last Olympics, it is safe to say that it will be around for a long time; or every 4 years at least. Go for the gold!
