Micah and His Idol of Silver

One of the more peculiar stories in the Bible is that of Micah and his silver idol in Judges 17 and 18. The story begins with Micah's confession of theft. It happened that Micah had "taken" eleven hundred shekels of silver from his mother. This was in violation of the Fifth Commandment (Honour thy father and thy mother) and the Eighth Commandment (Thou shall not steal). When Micah knew that his mother had cursed the thief, he returned the silver.

After that, a strange thing happened. "Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and they were in the house of Micah." (Judges 17:4) Instead of being angry with Micah or punishing him, his mother helped to break the Second Commandment (Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image).

Next, Micah made an ephod, and a teraphim, and appointed one of his sons as his priest. One day, a Levite from Bethlehemjudah sojourned to the house of Micah. After a brief interview, Micah immediately decided to install the Levite as his priest. In exchange, the Levite would be compensated with an annual wage of ten shekels of silver, a suit of clothes, and food. Now, Micah felt pretty confident that he would be blessed by God.

Later, five scouts from the tribe of the Danites came upon the house of Micah while they were searching for a suitable land for their occupation. Remembering Micah's graven silver idol, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the scouts craved for these objects when they returned with six hundred warriors while they were on their way to the country of Laish. Entering the house of Micah, they convinced the Levite to be the priest of their tribe so he took the objects and left with them.

When Micah found out that his gods and his priest were gone, he chased after the Danites, but there was nothing he could do because he was afraid that he would be killed. After the founding of the city of Dan, Micah's silver graven idol was placed in the house of God in Shiloh. Poor Micah! Back then, silver was used as money, but he should have known better. Now, things are different. If you want to sell silver, you can collect instant cash for silver.
